Once Upon a Time...

It was actually fairly recently that the idea for Spoiled Wag came into being.

May 24th is quite the special date for us as that is when this little menace was born. ⇩

Small dog breeds often have a hard time managing with cold weather. This is primarily because they lose heat more quickly, a consequence of having a greater body surface area relative to their weight, which leads to faster heat loss.

Moreover, the absence of a thick coat and having less body fat exacerbates their vulnerability to the cold. Unlike larger breeds, small dogs typically have less fat, which serves as a natural insulator by retaining body heat.

This is why you might often see small dogs dressed in clothes, more so than larger breeds. Dog coats offer extra warmth and protection, reducing their exposure to cold conditions. Despite this, finding quality dog clothing for small breeds remains a challenge.

When we used to buy clothes for Sammy we would typically encounter one of three major issues.

  1. Many of the coats were disappointingly thin, serving more as fashion statements than functional garments.
  2. Coats advertised as waterproof, turning out to be no waterproof.
  3. Lastly, sizing was a frequent problem. Although Sammy is a full fledged adult, he is a Mini Yorkshire Terrier. He does not fit into clothes designed for puppies, but, standard sizes don't fit him either.

Driven by this, we started making Sammy's clothes ourselves. Over the years, we have experimented with a variety of fabrics, materials, and patterns. We continue to experiment and push ourselves to be more and more creative. What truly motivates us are the compliments Sammy receives whenever he sports a coat we have crafted ourselves (he appreciates these compliments as well!).

It wasn't until recently that someone suggested we expand our efforts to create dog coats for other pets facing the same struggles. That's how Spoiled Wag was born.

Following this inspiration, we participated in a small business exhibition, which was an eye-opening experience. Engaging with diverse attendees, we realized the demand for unique, handmade dog coats extended far beyond just small breeds. This insight has broadened our vision and reinforced our commitment to catering to the needs of dogs of all sizes, providing them with warmth and chic.
